CHANDIGARH: Haryana Finance Minister Birender Singh on Monday described Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s decision not to join the Union Cabinet as “historic” and in keeping with the conventions of the Nehru-Gandhi family. In a statement, Mr. Birender Singh said that during the country’s freedom struggle Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru had made supreme sacrifices while Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had sacrificed their lives to protect the unity and integrity of the nation. The Finance Minister said that “in spite of repeated requests by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Rahul Gandhi did not join the Union Cabinet and preferred to serve the Congress Party” with dedication and zeal.
