Opportunities in the US explained Some of the Fulbrighters shared their experience CUTTACK: The US Educational Foundation in India (USEFI), the Fulbright Commission in India that administers Fulbright and other fellowships for Indian and US citizens conducted an outreach programme in fellowship opportunities for the faculty and students of Ravenshaw University here on Monday. Fulbright executive director Jane E. Schukoske and USEFI staff from New Delhi and Kolkata explained about the opportunities for study, research and teachings in wide range of disciplines the US. “Fellowships are offered in disciplines like agriculture, civic engagement, business studies, communication studies, public administration, strategic studies, science and technology”, Schukoske said. She informed that Fulbright fellowship applications are invited for 2009-10 academic year. “At least 196 scholars from India would go to US in the current year for studies and research while 108 US citizens would come to India for similar purposes”, the executive director said. Reference requiredUrging the faculty and students to avail the opportunities, the Fulbrighters emphasized that the applications and proposals for the scholarships have to be properly drafted. “The proposals for scholarships should have relevant reference and scholars should be prepared to work as cultural ambassadors. The impact of Fulbright programme is widespread and since its inception, about 3,00,000 scholars have participated in the Fulbright programme worldwide. Since 1950, USEFI has awarded over 16,500 fellowships, primarily Fulbright fellowships to Indians and Americans. In 2007-08, at least 76 Indians were awarded Fulbright grants in various fields, the Fulbrighters informed. Some of the Fulbrighters of Orissa also shared their experience and the efforts they made to avail the opportunity of getting the fellowships. The Orissa Fulbrighters are also contemplating to start the Fulbright alumni chapter of Orissa very soon. The Vice-Chancellor of Ravenshaw University Debdas Chhotray, a Fulbrighter presided over the meeting while senior IPS office B K Sharma, a Hubert H Humphrey scholar shared his experience on the occasion.
