Cultural shows mark Ugadi

BERHAMPUR: With Ugadi Chutney and cultural shows the Telugu families of the city welcomed their new year on Monday.

Around 30 per cent of the populations in this city are Telugus so the whole city bore a festive look.

The Telugu households had decorated their houses with mango leaves. Different women’s organisations organised competitions for married women, girls and children at different venues to celebrate Ugadi. Competitions on hairdressing and skillful use of ornaments for women was organised at five places in the city.

Musical play

The members of the Andhra Mahila Samajam enacted a musical play in the evening at the Kanyaka Parameswari temple.

According to M.Kameswari, the director of the play and the president of the Samajam, it was a depiction of the life of a woman from her birth till death and the sacrifices she makes to make all around her prosper.

On Sunday evening at the same venue the members of a women’s club had organised a qawali competition in Telugu. There were also competitions of Dandia dance.

Therapeutic effect

On Sunday morning most Telugu families welcomed their Oriya neighbours with the special Ugadi chutney after the priests read out the new Telugu almanacs at their homes.

This special chutney is prepared with green mangoes, jaggery, neem flowers, salt, and pepper.

According to K.N. Rao, this chutney represents the mix of emotions in our life.

The Ugadi chutney is a mixture of five major tastes like sweet, sour, bitter, salty and hot. Rao said this Ugadi chutney also has therapeutic value as it contains neem flowers as a main ingredient.
