The Tallakulam branch of State Bank of India was functioning till 8 p.m., which was very helpful to customers. But without assigning any reason, the working hours have been curtailed to till 4 p.m. It is requested that the bank authorities revert to the old practice. Malligai Mannan, Madurai Race Course parkThe park at the centre of the Race Course area near the Electricity Board Office is kept locked, not maintained properly and totally ignored by the civic authorities. Race Course is one of the popular places in Madurai where people enjoy jogging and utilise swimming pool, stadium and the running tracks. Hence, the park should be renovated with all amenities, especially with equipment for entertaining children, and decorated with colourful lights and landscaped garden. I appeal to the Collector and Corporation Commissioner to beautify the park on the lines of Eco Park. R. G. Rethinam, Madurai Swimming poolsIn villages, there are wells, tanks, ‘kanmais’ and other water bodies to learn and enjoy swimming. Urban areas are bereft of these facilities, which are a source of entertainment and good health. Hence, the government must construct more number of swimming pools in urban areas. S. M. Kannan Madurai High speed hurtsI happened to travel from Chennai to Madurai in Pandiyan Express on March 30. Though the train departed from Chennai Egmore at the right time, it reached an hour behind schedule in Madurai. Late arrival has become the common feature, which is not the issue here. The point is that the train was running at a high speed in some stretches probably to cover up for the lost time. This resulted in heavy vibration in the bogies, leading to discomfort for passengers. One wonders whether such a high speed is really required at the cost of passengers’ safety. Will the authorities look into it? S. Ganapathy,
Madurai Collect tollRegarding the maintenance of road between the Housing Board and the junction of All India Radio station, and Koodal Nagar overbridge (Readers’ Mail, March 18), the authorities may consider the following suggestion to overcome fund crunch felt by the Anaiyur and Vilangudi civic bodies: a toll can be collected for this stretch and speed breakers laid at suitable places to check overspeeding menace posed by lorries. G. P. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai Highway in tattersMany stretches on Theni highway between Kalavasal and Achampathu are in tatters owing to rain and movement of heavy vehicles. Motorists find it difficult to negotiate many stretches, especially near Modakkusalai, Virattipathu and Achampathu. I request the National Highway authorities to take up patch work immediately. S. M. Krishnan,
Madurai Antidote in PHCsSince antidote for snake bite and dog bite are available only at government hospitals in the district headquarters, people have to travel long distance from far off villages with anxiety and mental agony to get treatment. Sometimes, the victims succumb on the way. So, it is requested that sufficient stock of antidote is kept at primary health centres (PHC) also and the staff made available at any time of the day or night to administer it to the victims in time. R. Pandithurai, Madurai
