Sonia Gandhi New Delhi: With price rise threatening to become a major issue in the coming elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said the government must ensure that the prices of essential commodities remain affordable to the aam aadmi. In a “Letter to Congresspersons” in the latest issue of the party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh, she also put the onus of controlling the prices on the State governments. They should strengthen the public distribution system and control black marketing and hoarding. Referring to the coming elections in a number of States this year, Ms. Gandhi said the party confronted many challenges, most importantly, sustaining unity and discipline at all levels of the organisation. Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said: “Nobody is agitating against price rise more than the government itself. Concern has been expressed by the government, by the Congress President.” Curb inflation: YechurySenior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury met Ms. Gandhi and sought urgent steps by the government to curb inflation. Mr. Yechury is also understood to have discussed the nuclear issue though details of the talks were not available. — PTI
