NEW DELHI: In a daring daylight robbery, a gang of armed men ambushed a cash van and made off with Rs.30 lakh after shooting at and injuring its security guard in the posh Greater Kailash-II area of South Delhi on Monday evening. According to the police, it all happened around 5-30 p.m. when the cash van belonging to CMS Securitas was parked outside a shopping complex in the DDA market at Masjid Mor. While two men from the van had gone to collect the daily proceeds from a liquor outlet located in the complex and the gunman and the driver were seated inside, a Tata Sumo vehicle carrying about five persons stopped near the cash van. Chilly powderOne of the occupants of the Tata Sumo threw a fistful of chilly powder at gunman Suresh Kumar and driver Gyanendra. Another accomplice whipped out a country-made firearm and tried to snatch a bag containing Rs.30 lakh kept inside the van, at which gunman Suresh offered resistance. In the ensuing scuffle, the robber pulled the trigger and the firearm went off injuring Suresh in the neck. Before passers-by could rush over to help, the robbers fled with the cash. Suresh, a resident of Faridabad, was rushed to the Trauma Centre of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. The police later said he was out of danger. A case of robbery and attempt to murder has been registered at the Chittaranjan Park police station and the police are trying to identify the assailants on the basis of the description provided by the cash van driver.
