Nedumangad to have garbage-free zones

Staff Reporter

Sanitation drive, garbage segregation planned

Rs.2 crore for basic amenities in SC/ST colonies

Rs.10 lakh allotted for a mini-water supply scheme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A total sanitation drive and a segregated garbage collection and disposal system are high on the list of the Nedumangad municipality in the new financial year.

Awareness campaigns and sanitation seminars would be organised in selected wards along with a municipality-wide programme for vector control. As part of making Nedumangad a garbage-free zone, the municipality would put in place a direct garbage collection system that will segregate waste at the point of collection. The collected waste would be transported in specially modified vehicles to a treatment plant by specially trained Kudumbasree workers.

The municipality’s budget for 2008-09 presented recently has set apart Rs.2.42 crore for giving Nedumangad a modern and scientific garbage collection-disposal system. Vermi-composting and aerobic composting will be among the techniques used for garbage disposal at the plant. Side by side, stern action would be initiated against institutions/ individuals who throw garbage by the roadside. Important areas in the municipality, including Pathinonnamkallu, Chandamukku, Soorya Road, Kacherinada, Sathrammukku and Pazhakutti would be made garbage-free localities.

The municipality has submitted a Rs.2.4 crore scheme under the UDISSMMT scheme to the State-level nodal agency.

As part of the slum development scheme Rs.2 crore would be spent in providing basic amenities, including housing, water supply, electricity and community halls in seven SC/ST colonies in Nedumangad. The budget has set apart Rs.10 lakh for the development of the Nedumangad market. This will be utilised for preparing designated areas for the sale of different products, construction of a bore well and for appointing a security officer for the market.

For taluk hospital

Another Rs.10 lakh has been set apart for improving facilities at the taluk hospital. Using this fund steps would be taken to step up the services of the orthopaedic and ENT wings of the hospital and for the purchase of necessary equipment for this. Health sub-centres would be set up at Karinga and Mukkola.

The budget has also set apart Rs.10 lakh for putting in place a mini-water supply scheme at selected locations in the municipality. Steps would also be taken to improve the functioning of 100 bore wells and to install 100 more for BPL families in various parts of the municipality. As part of energy conservation drive 6,530 BPL families would be given two CFL lamps each.

Crematorium

The current financial year would also see the municipality take steps to set up a gas-operated crematorium.

The budget has set apart Rs.41 lakh for this purpose. Similarly, the construction of a town hall would also start this year at the 62-cents site identified for this purpose. The municipality would improve infrastructure facilities at primary schools, formulate a quality improvement programme at the Upper Primary level and implement the Akshaya programme.
