MCD committee Chairman, Opposition leader run out of luck

Staff Reporter

Both ousted in draw of lots conducted to eliminate civic body members

NEW DELHI: A draw of lots to eliminate nine members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee was conducted on Monday with the names of both Chairman Vijender Gupta and Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma being picked out of a white metal box.

The other ousted members (from zonal committees) included Sunil Kakkar, Meera Agarwal, Rampal Yadav, Mahek Singh and Savita Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Krishna Murari Jatav of the Congress. The three other eliminated members from the House were Rajni Abbi along with Vijender Gupta and J. K. Sharma.

The members can make a return to the MCD Standing Committee on April 21 when the election of the Mayor and three members from the House is slated to take place. The entire Standing Committee is expected to be in place in time for the next MCD session starting May 3.

The meeting that followed the draw of lots saw Additional Commissioner Naresh Kumar apprising members of the drainage situation existing in the Capital and the measure the civic body had taken to counter any problems.

“There are 112 critical drains, of which 73 are being subject to regular inspection. We have also arranged for 50 trucks and six loaders that will be shared among the zones as and where required,” he said.

Mr. Kumar said there were around 1,250 drains whose maintenance was being outsourced to private contractors. Drains that have no private takers will be maintained by the civic body after hiring the require implements but no re-tendering process would be allowed to take place, he added.

Additionally, the MCD is also planning to de-silt the major drains in unauthorised colonies that merged with city drains further along their course.
