New Delhi
NEW DELHI: A major player in the international counterfeit currency racket, who allegedly distributed huge amounts of fake notes in western Uttar Pradesh, has finally landed in the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence net. The agency claims to have seized Rs.22.85 lakh in fake currency from the accused, identified as Tehsim. Tehsim’s name cropped up during interrogation of Raman Pandit, who was arrested allegedly with Rs.13.36 lakh in fake currency by the DRI at Wazirabad in Delhi’s trans-Yamuna area on March 25. Raman told his interrogators that he was going to supply the notes to Tehsim, the person who allegedly circulated fake notes mainly in western UP. A smart player, Tehsim had not been caught with a huge counterfeit currency consignment so far. Investigations revealed that he was arrested in 2006 by the Delhi police on the basis of his accomplice’s disclosure. He soon came out on bail. Tehsim was again arrested last year reportedly by the Special Task Force of the UP police after one of his gang members was caught. He again came out of jail within a short span as it was a small seizure. After Raman’s arrest, the DRI mounted surveillance on Tehsim – who also operated under the code name Akbar -- and found out that he would go to Amritsar in Punjab to procure fake notes from his other contact. On Sunday morning, the agency sleuths arrested him in Amritsar allegedly with the consignment. During interrogation, he purportedly disclosed that he belonged to Shamli near Meerut. In his mid-30s, Tehsim is suspected have entered the business of counterfeit currency over a decade ago. He gradually became one of the key distributors in western UP, Delhi and nearby areas.
