Women’s film festival

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Postgraduate Department of Communication of Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College, in association with the International Association of Women in Radio and Television, will present the 4th International Women’s Film Festival “Insights and Aspirations” on April 11 and 12. It is being organised by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT).

IAWRT is a non-profit organisation of women working in the electronic and allied media. It seeks to ensure that women’s views and values become an integral part of programme making. It offers professional skills training, grants and fellowships, and presents awards of excellence to women.

The films to be showcased are made by women directors who celebrate the vision of women through film. Paromita Vohra’s “Morality TV & the Loving Jehad” looks outside the frames of “breaking news” on India’s news channels to uncover a town’s complex dynamics. — the fear of love, the constant scrutiny and control of women’s mobility and sexuality, a history of communal violence, caste brutalisation and feudal mindsets. Mira Nair’s “Migration” deals with the AIDS virus as a great class leveller in society by following its transmission through stories that weave through urban and rural India.

The film festival will be held at Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College, Centre for Management Studies, next to Atria Hotel, Palace Road. Admission is free and registration begins at 9 a.m. For details, call 9845019306 or 22353216/17.
