Farmers say toddy is a drink that has ‘more nutrition than alcohol’ They claim that move will help revive rural economy, as in Sri Lanka ERODE: Farmers affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Kal Iyakkam have urged the State Government to permit toddy tapping. At a meeting on Tuesday, they said the Government should lift the ban on tapping toddy, a drink that had “more nutrition than alcohol”. They reasoned that of the eight crore palm trees in the country, over five crore were in Tamil Nadu and the trees grew without application of fertiliser or pesticide. The absence of chemicals would mean that the tapped toddy would be pure. Further, in defence of toddy tapping, the farmers said the move would help revive the rural economy, as it had in Sri Lanka, which exports toddy. The farmers announced that they would stage a dharna in front of the Secretariat on September 16 to press their demands.
