Rs. 1,047.26-cr. credit plan for Gulbarga

Special Correspondent

Rs. 948.25 crore earmarked for the priority sector

The target for crop loans fixed at

Rs. 572.92 crore

GULBARGA: The annual credit plan for the district for 2008-09 has been fixed at Rs. 1,047.26 crore.

A sum of Rs. 948.25 crore has been earmarked to the priority sector and Rs. 99.01 crore to the non-priority sector.

The plan prepared by the State Bank of India, lead bank of the district, was released by the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, P.C. Jaffar, here on Tuesday.

Importance

While importance has been given to crop loans and agriculture and allied activities, there has been a reduction in the targets for other areas in the priority sector.

While the target for crop loans has been increased from Rs. 378.02 crore for 2007-08 to Rs. 572.92 crore for 2008-09, there has been a slight increase in the target fixed for agriculture and allied activities from Rs. 23.30 crore fixed for 2007-08 to Rs. 23.68 crore for 2008-09.

There is an increase in the target fixed for the priority sector this year by Rs. 165.28 crore compared to the last year’s target.

Increased

Last year, the target was Rs 782.97 crore and this has been increased to Rs. 948.25 crore.

Similarly, there is an increase in the non-priority loan credit target — from Rs. 86.38 crore in 2007-08 to Rs. 99.01 crore.

However, the aggregate credit plan for the district is lower than the PLP prepared by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development as Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s announcement of waiver of farm loans has to be taken into account while preparing the plan.

Low HDI

Speaking after releasing the credit plan, Mr Jaffar said that the Human Development Index (HDI) of Gulbarga district was low compared to other districts and bankers should take this aspect while preparing the annual credit plan.

Their approach should be not only to remove poverty and help deprived sections of society, but also to help the district to come up in the Human Development Index, he said.

Backward

He said that the district was backward in all aspects and bankers should identify remedies for the removal of backwardness.
