Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The youth organised a procession here on Tuesday in support of the long-pending demand of the Hyderabad Karnataka region to amend Article 371 to provide special reservation to the backward regions in job and educational opportunities.

Under the leadership of Hyderabad Karnataka Yuva Horata Samiti (HKYHS) president Vikram Patil, they took out a procession from Nehru Gunj to Veerashaiva Kalyana Mantap where a conference was organised by the samiti to reiterate its demand to amend Article 371.

Speakers at the conference expressed happiness over the large number of youth participating in the procession and said this was a good sign and they had understood the need to amend Article 371.

Inaugurating the conference, senior Dalit leader and vice-president of the Republican Party of India Shivaram Moga said that to pressure the Union and State governments to fulfil the demand of the backward regions, there was a need for a concerted agitation and the support of the youth was needed.

President of the All-India Veerashaiva Mahasabha and former Minister Bhimanna Khandre said that the governments appeared to have not taken the agitation of the people of the backward regions in the State seriously and there was a need to launch a “do-or-die” agitation.

Vice-president of the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti Hanumanthrao Desai said that in the name of unification the people of Hyderabad Karnataka region, the people had been denied of their share in development.

While other areas in the State, particularly south, had developed in all sectors, the Hyderabad Karnataka region continued to be neglected in all aspects. “Of late, in the name of developing north Karnataka, Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum were getting more attention,” he added.

President of the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti Vaijnath Patil and Mr. Vikram Patil spoke.
