AITUC members stage demonstration

Staff Reporter

SALEM: Members of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) staged demonstrations and road blockades on Tuesday in protest against the Tamil Nadu Government for entrusting the administration of 14 welfare boards for unorganised sector workers to the Revenue Department.

The members said that they were opposing the transfer of administration of welfare boards as the functioning of the Revenue Department was fraught with corruption. It would be difficult for the poor unorganised workers to avail themselves of the benefits from schemes of the boards, they said.

The government’s move would cause inordinate delay in the distribution of welfare assistance to the workers as the Revenue Department was already overburdened.

The move would also lead to irregularities in the administration of welfare boards, they alleged.

They urged the government to handover the administration to the Labour Department again.

The members took out a procession and attempted to block the traffic near the Collectorate in support of their demand.

Over 100 members blocked the traffic on the Junction main road here for a short period.

They staged demonstrations in various parts including Kondalampatti, Omlaur, Theevattipatti, Mecheri, Jalakandapuram, Mettur, Sankagiri, Edapadi, Attur, Ayodhyapattinam and Peddanaickanpalayam.
