Samastha to support Sunni unity

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama has pledged all support for unity among Sunni organisations if Panakkad Syed Muhammed Ali Shihab Thangal, president, Indian Union Muslim League, takes the initiative to bring about the understanding.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, Cherussery Sainudheen Musliyar, general secretary of the organisation, and Kalambadi Muhammed Musliyar, president, said the Samastha, which always worked for unity, welcomed moves in that direction.

They said that unity did not mean the merger of organisations. It was for close cooperation among mahals. The quarrels and other problems in mahals, madrassas and other religious institutions were known to everybody. Sunnis were experiencing the bitterness of this division.

They said the Samastha never thought of sustaining the division by encouraging divisive activities. Its clear stand was not to have any division or disunity. This was the reason why its leaders had cooperated with the mediatory efforts earlier. However, there was no creative response from the other side. Though four persons representing Samastha went for unity talks here on January 15, nobody from the other side turned up.

A supreme council here on Tuesday took the decision that the organisation was ready for unity, they said.
