Corrections and clarifications

* * The last paragraph in a report “‘Buddhadeb a very positive man’” (April 7, 2008) was “Mr. Halim, who is also the chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, ‘is the largest-serving Speaker in the world who has very kindly extended us an invitation to come here,’ Lord [Swaraj] Paul said.” It should have been “longest-serving Speaker”.

* * A recent advertisement in The Hindu has led to readers again raising the question of correctness of a name. The website of the Prime Minister’s Office (under “PM’s Team – Ministers of State”) gives the name of Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resource Development as Mrs D. Purandareswari. Staff in the office and residence of the minister clarify that her official name is Mrs Daggubati Purandeswari. This column has earlier clarified that “Purandareshwari” is correct. Now, both variations appear to be valid.

* * The Guardian, in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column (Tuesday April 8, 2008) says “We were wrong to say that the top of the Eiffel Tower would be reshaped in time for its 120th anniversary next year, in line with the winning design in a competition. Serero Architects submitted an unsolicited design for a new viewing platform, which has not been approved by the tower’s management group (‘Vive l’evolution’, page 19, March 24).” The item appeared in The Hindu as “New look for Eiffel Tower” (Op-Ed, March 25, 2008).

* * A report “Massa leads Ferrari 1-2 at Bahrain” (“Sport”, April 7, 2008) said that “Two-time World champion Fernando Alonso was ninth”, while the results column gave it as “9. Timo Glock (Toyota) +69.5s, 10. Fernando Alonso (Renault) +77.1s”. The Sports Desk clarifies both are right. Alonso did finish tenth in the Bahrain GP, as given in the results column. He was also ninth, as it refers to the overall drivers standings.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
