Water treatment plant for Kollam

Ignatius Pereira

7.5 acres of land at Vadakevila to be acquired

NEW INITIATIVE: Vasoori Chira at Vadakkevila in Kollam city that has been identified for setting up a drinking water treatment plant.

KOLLAM: A new water treatment and purification plant will be built at Vadakevila in the city.

Mayor N. Padmalochanan told The Hindu that 7.5 acres of a marshy expanse, Vasoori Chira, at Vadakevila would be taken over for the purpose.

As a good portion of the land was in private hands, the Corporation would adopt the fast track system of making the State Cabinet take a decision on acquiring the land, Mr. Padmalochanan said.

The feasibility certificate had already been submitted by the Kerala Water Authority, he said.

The issue would be taken up at an empowerment committee meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, the Mayor said and added that he would be attending the meeting.

The plant is needed in connection with the water supply scheme to be commissioned under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP). Work on the project is expected to commence in a couple of months.

Under the project, Thenmala Dam will replace Sasthamcotta Lake as the source of the city’s drinking water requirement. The treatment plant for the water drawn from Sasthamcotta Lake is at Sasthamcotta itself.

Once Thenmala Dam replaces Sasthamcotta Lake, a new plant is required and the Corporation decision is that the plant should be within the city limits.

“The formalities in connection with the KSUDP water supply scheme has progressed at an appreciably fast pace and Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran is instrumental for that,” Mr. Padmalochanan said.
