New events proposed in Ooty summer festival

Udhagamandalam: The 2008 summer festival in this hill station will be marked by a break from the routine.

Indicating this at a press conference held here on Tuesday, the Nilgiris Collector, Anandrao V.Patil, said that a number of new events would be included.

Pointing out that the curtain on the festival would go up on May 10 along with a rose show at the Centenary Rose Park here, he said that it will conclude on May 18. The venue will be the Breek’ HADP open air stadium.

Stating that a Tea Exhibition will be among the highlights, he said that a suitable venue will be selected for the event.

Since the administration was keen on promoting heritage tourism in this hill station a Heritage Walk would be organised. It will commence at the Boat House and cover various places with heritage value.

While a regatta would be organised at the Pykara lake, a boat pageant will be held at the Ooty lake. Among the other events would be a vintage car rally, a treasure hunt, a photo exhibition, a marathon race and painting and drawing competitions. Stating that cultural programmes would be organised on all the days, Mr. Patil said that there would be programmes at Gudalur and Kotagiri also During the season efforts would be made to focus on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the Sullivan Memorial at Kannerimukku. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would organise package tours.
