Letters to the Editor
The Hindu deserves to be congratulated on publishing the letters written by Subramania Bharati to the newspaper (April 6). The present generation should be made aware of the contributions of the great Tamil poet and freedom fighter. I had the opportunity to read two collections of his poems Song of the Cuckoo and the Voice of a Poet. The second book contains translations of two of his poems by C. Rajagopalachari and J.M. Cousins. I earnestly hope Professor A.R. Venkatachalapathy will take the initiative to compile a comprehensive collection of Bharati’s writings. A.K. Dasgupta, Hyderabad I read with interest Subramania Bharati’s letters written to The Hindu. They reveal how articulate he was in not only expressing himself but also in enlightening the readers on his understanding of various social issues confronting the nation at that time. He was forthright in his views on social reform, and the impact of colonial rule on the Indian polity. K.S. Sundaram, Bangalore Subramania Bharati’s letters to The Hindu exhibit his mastery over English. The revelation that he was versatile in other languages comes as a surprise. Those who exhort Tamils to shun other languages should learn a lesson from Bharati. Tamil has survived eons without anyone’s help and will prosper long after all of us are gone. Arvind Narayan, Mauritius
