Fire broke out on the ground floor of a private footwear godown near the Old Washermenpet area

CHENNAI: Firemen rescued three workers, including a child, from the terrace of a five-storey building, where fire broke out from the ground floor of a private footwear godown near the Old Washermenpet area on Tuesday.

Fire and Rescue Service Personnel received a fire call around 2.45 p.m. following which more than five fire tenders were rushed to Kathbada Third Street near Krishna Theatre.

The five-storey building situated in a narrow bylane manufactured and stored footwear and sports shoes, fire officers said.

Though the reason for the fire was not known immediately, some of the workers said that they saw a thick smoke billowing from the ground floor. Soon, it spread to the other floors, following which panic prevailed in the area.

The fire tender from the Washermenpet fire station was rushed immediately. This not only helped in preventing fire from spreading further, but also contained the damage to a great extent, said Divisional Fire Officer V. Vijaykumar.

Rope ladder

Apprehending trouble, three workers identified as Manikandan (14), Ibrahim (47) and Jainulladin (49) climbed the stairs and reached the terrace of the building. With the assistance of a rope ladder from the adjacent building, all the three workers were safely rescued, Mr. Vijaykumar added. The fire which was put out in about an hour was supervised by DFOs Meenakshi Vijaykumar and Priya. There was no casualty. The building had no facilities in order, the officials added.

Police said that a case has been registered. The exact loss and cause of the fire are also being investigated.
