PT wants Centre to give compensation

Staff Reporter

The Centre should sanction Rs.1,000 crore to rain-hit areas in the State

MADURAI: The Centre should immediately sanction Rs.1,000 crore as flood relief to rain-affected areas in the State, said the Puthiya Tamilagam leader K. Krishnasamy on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that the Central team inspecting the rain-affected areas in the State should provide appropriate information on the level of damage and compensation needed to be given.

Dr. Krishnasamy said that he had visited the rain-affected areas in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram districts and found that the announced solatium to the affected families for loss of property and life was inadequate.

He claimed that nearly 25 houses were damaged in each village and means of livelihood too had been affected as brick kilning and salt manufacturing had come to a halt and death of cattle too affected the income and pushed the villagers to starvation. Many villagers did not receive any compensation, he alleged.

The compensation was a pittance when compared to the intensity of damage, he said and wanted the Government to provide Rs 1 lakh for completely damaged houses as almost 30 per cent of the population in southern districts lived in thatched huts.

The State should also make sure that the compensation went to the affected sharecroppers and small and marginal farmers.

He alleged that the Tamil Nadu Government had not allotted the funds meant for Dalits under various schemes and it was one of the reasons for their dismal condition.
