THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma has said that the government would set up 30 Matsya Neethi Stores in the State to ensure distribution of fish at reasonable prices.

He was speaking here after inaugurating the Tsunami Emergency Assistant Programme and Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme for fish workers in the district on Tuesday.

The occasion also marked the launch of special vehicles for fisherwomen to enable them to distribute their stocks even in rural areas in the district.

The vehicles, around 100 in total, can seat up to five persons each.

Mr. Sarma hoped that the launch of the vehicles would revolutionise the existing pattern of fish vending in the State.

“The image of fisherwomen transporting their stock to various localities by balancing it on their heads will soon be a thing of the past,” he said.

The government will also set up seafood kitchens in the State. Women appointed at these kitchens will be given special training at the Institute of Hotel Management in Kovalam.

V. Surendran Pillai, MLA, who presided over the function, described the programme as a “far-sighted move” from the part of the government.
