CHENNAI: As part of the ‘Year of Russia in India’ celebrations being observed this year, a 15-day photo exhibition on Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman cosmonaut, has been organised at the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Gandhi Mandapam Road, in association with the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Chennai.

The exhibition features a rare collection of 50 photographs highlighting the importance of Indo-Russian space cooperation. The exhibition is open to the public between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on all days.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Stanislav Simakov, Vice-Consul of the Consulate of Russia in Chennai and Director of the Russian Centre for Science and Culture, said the exhibition on the first woman cosmonaut would help further strengthen the Indo-Russian bilateral cooperation.

He explained that the Russian Centre was keen to organise more such exhibitions with the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre and other organisations about Indo-Russian space cooperation.

P. Iyamperumal, Executive Director of the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, said the Centre would continue to support such educative exhibitions not only in Chennai but also in the II-tier towns of Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Vellore.

Later, a special lecture on the 71-hour space journey of Valentina Tereshkova aboard the Vastok-6 was delivered by Anastasia Shmidt, Representative of the Russian Centre for Science and Culture.

A film on Indo-Russian space cooperation and Russian women in space was screened on the occasion.
