THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was an event the students of New Higher Secondary School, Nellimoodu, in Balaramapuram will cherish. Around 100 volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS), comprising 35 girls and 65 boys, along with Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar on Tuesday afternoon harvested half-an-acre on which they had planted paddy last year. The entire harvest, which came around 300 kg, was evenly distributed among the students and the owner of the land, which the students had taken on lease for cultivation. J. Unnikrishnan, programme officer, NSS, said the programme was launched by Minister for Agriculture Mullakkara Ratnakaran as a part of its ten-day camp in December. “We wanted to do something different as a part our activities. The success of the programme showed that the project had inculcated a love for farming and agricultural activities in addition to kindling a spirit of discipline, confidence and responsibility among the students,” he said.
