Rural job scheme in Karaikal from May

KARAIKAL: The National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme will be implemented in Karaikal district from May 1, Collector N. Vasanthakumar said here on Tuesday.

He held a meeting on the implementation of the scheme with representatives of farmers’ associations, ayacutdars and other leaders of commune panchayats. Dr. Vasanthakumar said that poor families in the rural areas would be provided jobs in desilting of irrigation channels, creation of new ponds, laying of village roads, etc., for a minimum period of 100 days in a year with a minimum wage of Rs.80 a day.

The wages would be paid through the banks and savings bank accounts would be opened for the beneficiaries under the scheme.

Photo identity cards would be issued to the selected beneficiaries in the district before the month-end, he said.
