dated April 10, 1958: India’s stand clarified

Prime Minister Nehru regretted “the ill-informed criticism” in the foreign press of India’s attitude towards the recommendations of Dr. Graham, United Nations mediator on the Kashmir issue. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on April 9, Mr. Nehru pointed out that it would be entirely incorrect to suggest that India had rejected Dr. Graham’s proposals. The first proposal of Dr. Graham, Mr. Nehru said, wanted a declaration that peaceful atmosphere would be maintained by both sides. Mr. Nehru pointed out that it has been India’s contention that Pakistan had not been maintaining a peaceful atmosphere all these ten years. There was therefore no question of India not willing to maintain a peaceful and friendly atmosphere.
