Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Wednesday demanded a white paper on the state of the Puducherry Kamarajar Government Medical College project. Initiating the debate on 11 demands including Legislative Assembly, Administrator, Council of Ministers and elections, CPI member R.Viswanathan said the Cabinet decisions should be implemented in a time-bound manner. He urged the Chief Minister to make it clear if the medical college project had been taken up on the basis of a Cabinet decision or not. The government also owed an explanation to the people if the ongoing project would be fulfilled or not. Referring to the proposal on constructing a new Assembly complex, he said the government should not create an impression that the legislature was “vacillating.” He urged the administration to make its stand clear on the issue as the project had not yet taken off. On the constitution of various House Committees, Mr.Viswanathan said the functioning of the panels should be toned up. He also called for steps to set up of a well-equipped Assembly library. He reiterated that November 1 should be declared as Independence Day in Puducherry. Member of the Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC) N.Anandu said the Assembly should have its own website. He stressed the need for distribution of error-free Electronic Photo Identity Cards to all the eligible voters so that they would be able to avail themselves of benefits under various welfare schemes. He urged the government to take necessary steps to increase security in the Yanam region as it was close to the Naxalite-infested Andhra Pradesh. Security should be tightened in Karaikal in view of VIP visits to the region. He demanded separate reservation for women in the police force. AIADMK walkoutLeader of the AIADMK A. Anbalagan and his party colleague Om Sakthi Sekar staged a walkout close on the heels of the Chair’s decision to expunge certain remarks made by Mr. Sekar.
