Seeking employment: Aspirants for a career in the Defence forces participate in a recruitment rally in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

Chitradurga: “Even as a boy I dreamt of joining the armed forces. Many people from my village are in the armed forces,” said Yellappa Ittennavar, who has come from Kongaon village in Gokak taluk of Belgaum district for the recruitment rally organised by the Indian Air Force (IAF) here.

He says he comes from a remote village and his father is a shepherd. There are several aspirants from modest backgrounds who have come for the State-level airmen recruitment rally, which began on Wednesday.

The rally, which is being held for the first time in Chitradurga, has attracted good response from aspirants across the State.

“On the first day itself, the rally registered nearly 2,000 applicants, representing almost all districts of the State. This is encouraging,” said employment officer Kalandar Khan. Mr. Khan said such camps would give people from rural areas some exposure to life in the Defence forces. “There are many students who are not aware of the opportunities in the field. The IAF wanted to generate awareness, and give the people of the district a chance at employment,” he added. Elaborating on the selection process, G.U. Naren, Wing Commander, Airman Selection Centre, Bangalore, said the selection process would comprise physical, medical and written tests. “As the written test is being held in English and Hindi, many students faced some difficulty in tackling it. Aspirants from North India were at an advantage as a result,” he added.
