CPI(M) to contest 12 seats

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will contest from 12 constituencies in the coming elections to the State Assembly, according to State secretary of the party V.J.K. Nair.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Nair said his party would support those parties that would work in tandem to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party and other “communal” parties from coming to power.

Mr. Nair said though the CPI(M) was not in favour of entering into alliance with other parties, it will “work together with a few chosen parties such as the Janata Dal (Secular), the Congress and the Samajwadi Party and also Dalit and minority groups for defeating the BJP and other communal groups.” The CPI(M) had identified these parties for “friendly relationships” as they still retained secular character, he added. The party, however, would not mix other issues such as its economic and social programmes with that of other parties.

Mr. Nair alleged that the BJP was leading a “hate campaign” against minorities in the State on the model of Gujarat.

Mentioning the names of the candidates and the constituencies where the CPI (M) would contest Mr. Nair said G.V. Sriram Reddy (former MLA) would contest from Bagepalli, G. Siddagangappa from Gowribidanur, P. Tangaraj in Kolar Gold Fields (reserved), R. Chandra Tejaswi from Doddaballapur, Gowramma (women) from Krishnarajapuram , Maruthi Manpade from Gulburga Rural (reserved), Siddartha Tumakunta from Chincholi (reserved), Yeshwanth Maroli from Mangalore City South and Ramachandra Uchil from Mangalore, U. Dasu Bhandary from Baindoor, V.P. Kulkarni from Ramadurga and D. Venkataramana from in Vijaynagar in Bellary district.
