PUDUCHERRY: Two years have passed by, but four nurses of the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH & PGI), who underwent training in renal transplant operation theatre and post-operative care in Chennai, still await the allowances that are due to them, according to the Pondicherry Government Nurses Association. In 2006, the Government of Puducherry selected four nurses for the in a private hospital in Chennai. However, the orders were not issued to them, the association alleged. “We attended the training programme in two batches for a month each. No orders were issued to us then and the government assured that it would complete the formalities when we return after the training. As a result, we had to go to Chennai on our yearly leave,” said one of the nurses. In fact, the nurses had to spend for accommodation and food. There had been an inordinate delay in granting the transport and other allowances for the training period and also in sanctioning permission to treat the period as on duty, she added. Till date, the nurses had carried out theatre and ward duties for seven renal transplants at the IGGGH & PGI. “We have represented the issue several times to the senior officials but nothing has taken form till now. A year ago, they cited administrative problems for the delay and said the process was on,” another nurse said. Secretary of the Pondicherry Government Nurses Association M. Cadirvelou said the transport and other allowances for the surgeons from Chennai were granted on the same day of the transplant. However, a senior hospital authority of IGGGH & PGI said the matter had been taken up with the Health Secretary. The nurses would receive their allowances within a week, he added.
