The Jamia Millia Islamia prospectus for 2008-09 along with prescribed application forms for all courses at the university in Delhi is now available to students. These can be collected from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and the Faculty of Education. Sale of the prospectus will also begin from the Jamia School gate shortly. The prospectus costs Rs.500 for courses under the faculties of Engineering and Technology, Mass Communication Research Centre, Architecture, MBA, B.Ed., and diploma in Elementary Teacher Education, and Rs.200 for all other faculties. The cost of the prospectus for each course includes the entrance test fee. No other fee is required to be submitted at the time of submission of application forms. The prospectus can also be downloaded from www.jmi.nic.in The last date for submission of applications for most of the courses falls in the first week of May. The courses that have April 30 as their last submission date are: M.Sc. (Electronics), B.Tech. and diploma in Engineering. The programmes whose last date for submission is May 2 are M.A. in Mass Communication; M.A. in Convergent Journalism; post-graduate diploma in Development Communication; post-graduate diploma in Broadcast System Maintenance; post-graduate diploma in Still Photography and Visual Communication; and post-graduate diploma in Graphics and Animation. Indira Gandhi National Open University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Aeronautical Engineering and Research Organisation, Pune, to jointly develop a B.Tech programme in Aeronautical Engineering. The agreement was signed by IGNOU Registrar K. Laxman and AERO Chairman Anshul Sharma. The four-year programme will seek to develop knowledge, awareness and professional skills in the discipline of Aeronautical Engineering. The delivery of the programme – to begin in July 2009 -- will be through face-to-face mode coupled with open distance learning. The course material will be developed in collaboration with the experts in the aviation sector. Aligarh Muslim University hosted Adnan A. Siddiqi, counsellor for Cultural Affairs at the US Embassy in New Delhi, earlier this week on its campus. Mr. Siddiqi, who is also the Chairman of the US Educational Foundation in India, met Vice-Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis along with his father Anis Siddiqi, an alumnus of AMU. Mr. Siddiqi and his father interacted with the faculty of Law and Political Sc ience. At another function organised this week, Prof. Azis felicitated Mohammad Owais, a lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit, for receiving the “National Bio Sciences Award for Career Development” from the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. The Centre for Disaster Management Studies of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in New Delhi organised a certificate distribution and passing-out ceremony for the first batch of students of its MBA (Disaster Management) programme this past week. Fifty-one students have successfully completed the programme. The graduates mostly include senior officers from defence and para-military forces like the Indian Army, the Navy and the Central Reserve Police Force as well as different Central and State Government departments. There were candidates also from Delhi Jal Board, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Delhi Development Authority, Department of Environment of the Delhi Government, and Directorate-General of Health Services. Addressing the pass-outs, Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor and University Chancellor Tejendra Khanna said: “From today onwards, you are not just employees of your individual organisations but also professionals of disaster management, which implies that you have to always remain alert towards a possible mishap at your places of work, residence and society at large.” Vice-Chancellor K. K. Aggarwal, Registrar V. K. Jain and CDMS Director Amarjeet Kaur were present on the occasion. Parul Sharma
