CHENNAI: Angry relatives and friends of a 17-year-old boy who died under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday night, damaged nearly 15 cars, including a police patrol vehicle, in the Tirumangalam area. A Sub-Inspector of Police and a head constable were manhandled. There was panic in the area.

Four persons were arrested, and the police say they are on the lookout for more.

Inquiries revealed that A. Muthuraj of Padi Puthu Nagar was employed in a fast food unit on Padikuppam Second Street, Tirumangalam. Muthuraj used to remain in the restaurant till 10 p.m. When he did not return home even after 11 p.m., his brothers, who went in search of him, found him hanging inside the shop from a nylon rope.

They suspected that the he was murdered. They informed the police about it, and an alleged delay in the arrival of the police team angered them and other relatives.

In protest, they damaged the windscreens of several private cars and cabs parked on both sides of the road. Even as the police were trying to control them, Sub Inspector Kanniappan and head constable Das were manhandled. Patrol car driver Murthi was also injured, the police said.

Senior police officers went to the spot. Four persons, Thomas, Selvam, Devaraj and Saravanan, were arrested for attacking police personnel and damaging properties. The J. J. Nagar police are investigating.

The body of Muthuraj was sent to the Government General Hospital for post-mortem.
