Centre urged to release funds for flood relief

State has released Rs.175 crore for immediate relief


CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has asked the Centre to release Rs.1,140 crore from the National Calamity Fund for flood relief works in the State.

The State government had written to the Centre in this connection in the last week of March. Revenue Minister I. Periasami, who held discussions with the Central team at the Secretariat here on Wednesday, informed them that the State had released Rs.175 crore to undertake immediate relief works.Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and other senior officials participated in the discussion.

Central team returns

The four-member team, led by Union Joint Secretary (Home) Dharmendra Sharma, returned to Chennai on Wednesday after touring the affected districts. The team held detailed discussions with District Collectors and received representations from affected farmers.

According to an official release, the State received 158.03 mm rain from March 10 to 23 as against the normal rainfall of 19.9 mm.

Standing crops on about 3.40 lakh hectares and roads to a length of 13,000 km were affected. This apart, 1123 small bridges were damaged and many tanks were breached, the release added.
