HYDERABAD: World XI defeated India XI by eight wickets in the inaugural match of the ICL 20s World Series cricket championship at the floodlit Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Wednesday. The victory chase of World XI presented a contrasting sight in batting. While Lou Vincent (43 32 balls, 6 x 4, 1 x 6) was brutal in dispatching the ball, Damien Martyn (70 not out, 54 balls, 11 x4) was elegance personified. Poor fieldingNo doubt, Indian XI fielding was poor and in all, five catches were dropped. Earlier, India XI was off to a disastrous start, losing four wickets in three overs with only nine runs on the board. It was left to southpaw Tejinder Pal Singh to rescue the team, and he did it in style. His unbeaten 63 off 49 balls includes some authentic drives to the fence. The one that caught the eye was when he walked down to loft fast bowler Darryl Tuffey over long-on for a huge six. Despite losing captain R. Satish (0) in the middle overs, Tejinder combined well with Rohan Gavaskar (30, 2x4, 1x6) for a 61-run stand for the fifth wicket and then with Stuart Binny (37, 3x4, 1x6) put on 71 for the sixth wicket. The scores: India XI 141 for five in 20 overs (Tejinder Pal Singh 63 not out, Rohan Gavaskar 30, Stuart Binny 37 not out, Johan van der Wath two for 12) lost to World XI 145 for two in 18.3 overs (Lou Vincent 43, Damien Martyn 70 not out).
