Quota for State students in B.Tech. course Good placement record for institute Kozhikode: The National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) will start seven new courses in the coming academic year. Addressing a press conference on the institute campus at Chathamangalam near here on Wednesday, NIT-C director G.R.C. Reddy said that the courses included an undergraduate programme, B.Tech in biotechnology, and five postgraduate courses, three M.Tech. courses and two M.Sc Tech. programmes, and one PG diploma in civil engineering (Construction Management). M.Tech coursesThe M.Tech. courses are in nanotechnology, signal processing and telecommunications. The MSc Tech. programmes are in photonics and polymer science. The B.Tech. programme will have 30 seats, of which 15 will be reserved for students who studied 10+2 or Plus Two in Kerala and qualified the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). The M.Tech. and M.Sc Tech. programmes will have 18 seats each, of which five seats in each course will be reserved for sponsored candidates. The institute will be starting a Master of Business Administration (MBA) course. Only engineering graduates will be admitted to this course which will have 30 seats.
He said that to attract talent to the core faculty, the NIT-C was planning to have a system of ‘standing advertisement’, whereby candidates could apply for the faculty positions without waiting for the announcements. Focus on researchThe NIT-C was making progress in research in emerging technologies with a good number of classical works of international standards in progress. K.P. Mohandas, Dean (PG Studies and Research) said that research was the main thrust ever since Regional Engineering College, Calicut, was converted to NIT-C. Dr.Reddy said that the placement record of the institute was commendable. T.K. Suresh Babu, professor and head, Training and Placement Department, said that 168 companies had expressed willingness to participate in the placement process this year. But only 100 companies were given date as of now. He said 25 students got Rs.10 lakh each, the highest salary offered to NIT-C students so far. P.Syamala, dean (consultancy and sponsored research); P.Ananthakrishnan, registrar; and E.Gopinath (Dean, Undergraduate Studies) were present at the press conference.
