dated April 11, 1958: Atomic research

Prime Minister Nehru, initiating a debate on budget demands for grants for the Department of Atomic Energy in the Lok Sabha on April 10, reiterated that all the research work that was being done in India on atomic energy was intended for peaceful uses. “We are not interested in atomic arms and the like except in so far as we wish to avoid them and not be targets of them.” Mr Nehru said that fortunately India had some eminent scientists connected with atomic energy establishments who had done some good work and shown good results which had attracted attention in other parts of the world.
