Jansangharsha Manch resents appointment
|
GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat government has appointed Justice Akshay Mehta to the commission probing the Godhra train carnage and post-Godhra communal riots in 2002.
Justice Mehta, who retired as High Court judge last December, will fill the vacancy caused in the commission by the death of Justice K.G. Shah.
Justice G.T. Nanavati, retired Judge of the Supreme Court, heads the two-member panel. However, the Jansangharsha Manch, which represents the riot victims, has resented Justice Mehta’s appointment.
Its advocate Mukul Sinha said the Manch would consider boycotting Commission proceedings if the government did not reconsider his appointment.
Dr. Sinha claimed that in the Tehelka expose, on the State government’s alleged involvement in the Godhra carnage just before the Assembly elections in December last, one of the riots accused Babu Bajrangi referred to Justice Mehta as “our own man.”
