‘Psoriasis can be controlled’

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Those who suffer from psoriasis need not lose heart. Though it is considered incurable, there are ways to effectively control the disease, says an American dermatologist.

Psoriasis-affected people suffer from a chronic inflammation of the skin. The disease causes pain, severe itching and swelling. John Y. Koo, vice-chairman of University of California San Francisco Medical Center and Professor in Dermatology at the university, was in Bangalore as part of a lecture tour focussing on psoriasis.

Although not effectively curable, he recommended that the disease be treated by the control and removal of rashes and swelling through topical (application on the skin), systemic (internal medication) or photo therapies, depending on the extent of the disease in a patient. Mr Koo said an estimated 10 million in India, and 2 to 3 per cent of the world’s population, are affected by psoriasis.

A hereditary disease, psoriasis is triggered by an abnormally fast growth cycle of skin cells.
