Verdict reserved on Kanchi Acharya’s plea

Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: At the conclusion of arguments, the Supreme Court on Thursday reserved verdict on a petition by the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, seeking a direction to the Puducherry government to appoint a public prosecutor to conduct trial in the Sankararaman murder case.

The case, in which he is the main accused, has been shifted from Tamil Nadu.

Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices R.V. Raveendran and M.K. Sharma were on the Bench.

Senior counsel U.R. Lalit, appearing for the Sankaracharya, had argued that once a case was transferred out of Tamil Nadu, it was the responsibility of Puducherry to appoint a public prosecutor for conducting the trial.

Altaf Ahmed, senior counsel for the Tamil Nadu government, however, maintained that the State would continue to have control over the case and it could appoint a public prosecutor.
