Railways steams ahead

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Railways enjoyed a big lead over West Bengal ‘A’ in the final of the team-of-four duplicate event in the 39th summer National bridge championship at the Cordite Factory, Aruvankadu, near here, on Thursday.

Railways added another eight IMPs in the last segment of its semifinal to beat Uttar Pradesh by a total of 21 IMPs on way to the final, while West Bengal ‘A’ gave up only one IMP to Tamil Nadu to run home victor by 23 IMPs.

In the first set of 14 boards in the final, five-time winner Railways took a 16 IMP lead (38-22 IMPs) but had to face a resurgent West Bengal team which fought back to recover five IMPs in the second session and bring down the deficit to 11 IMPs.

Railways, however, consolidated its position by picking up another 15 IMPs (31-16) in the third set to sit pretty with a lead of 26 IMPs.
