Facelift for heritage buildings in Chennai

A prominent heritage building in Chennai, Chepauk Palace, is to be rehabilitated.

CHENNAI: The Chepauk Palace and the office of the Deputy Inspector-General of Registration on Rajaji Salai are among the heritage buildings in the city to be rehabilitated, according Public Works Minister Durai Murugan. Estimates are being prepared for this purpose.

The works on the palace and the DIG’s office are likely to cost Rs. 3.5 crore and Rs. 50 lakh respectively. Besides, renovation and preservation of the Music College building on Greenways Road and the Metropolitan Magistrate Court building on Rajaji Salai have been proposed. These works are estimated to cost Rs. 83 lakh.

Among the ongoing works on heritage buildings are the renovation of the Government Ophthalmic Hospital Building at Egmore and the Rajaji Hall in Government Estate, together costing Rs. 91 lakh; the upgradation of the Archives Department’s building at Egmore at a cost of Rs. 2.16 crore, and the renovation of the compound wall of the Government Museum building at a cost of Rs. 77 lakh.

Lighting arrangements for the façade of the Madras High Court and the restoration of the Madras Literary Society building will be taken up this year.

These works are estimated to cost at Rs. 90 lakh. In respect of lighting of the façade of Fort St. George and renovation of the Amaravathy Gallery at the Chennai Government Museum, the process of tendering the works, costing Rs. 80 lakh, is under way. Grants of the 12th Finance Commission are the source of funding for all these works.

The Minister furnished the details of work in progress in the Assembly.
