Move to restrict free movement of foodgrains flayed

KOZHIKODE: The Federation of North Kerala Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FENOCCI) has flayed the reported move to impose restrictions on the free movement and trade of essential commodities such as foodgrains, sugar, lentils and edible oil.

In a memorandum to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Food Minister C. Divakaran and Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy here on Thursday, M. Muzammil, FENOCCI chairman said the government must detract from the move to impose restrictions on the free trade of essential commodities.

Although the statement of the Food Minister in this regard was reportedly intended to curb the rising price line, in a consumerist State such as Kerala, the re-imposition of the restrictions will have a negative impact.

Under the circumstances the trade restrictions on essential commodities that were removed in 2002 as per the Essential Commodities Act 1955, ought not to be imposed once again, it was added.
