Kozhikode: The people of Kozhikode can burst firecrackers this Vishu as a group of traders opened shops at Swapna Nagari grounds in the city on Wednesday. The district administration arranged the facility at Swapna Nagari after they had refused to sanction licences to cracker shops in the Corporation limits. The decision came in the wake of the fire at Moideen Palli Road in the city on April 5, 2007 that claimed eight lives, injured over 50 people and destroyed more than 80 shops. The fire was triggered from a wholesale fireworks shop of the Kerala Stationary Mart. Meanwhile, a group of traders under the banner of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES) and Ayyans World have decided to move the High Court for contempt of court for not allowing cracker sales within the city limits even after its order. KVVES president T. Nasirudheen said they would move the court in this regard. According to Manoj of Ayyans World, a wholesale dealer of firecrackers in the city, they had obtained a High Court order allowing them to open shops at Koya Road here. However, the district authorities had sealed their shops recently. More shops were opened at Swapna Nagari on Thursday. A total of 61 applicants had expressed their willingness to open shops there. Traders who were opposed to opening shops at Swapna Nagari cited the huge cost to set up shops there and the possibility of thefts as drawbacks of the site. However, small-scale traders are happy to pitch their tents at Swapna Nagari.
