Trees are being cut on land where a science park is planned

VC promises activists that only a few trees will be axed

DHARWAD: The Hubli-Dharwad Nagarika Parisara Samiti has taken exception to felling of trees in the land belonging to Karnatak University in Dharwad for the construction of a science park.

Members of the samiti, led by its president Shankar Kumbi and secretary A.S. Balasubramanya, met Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University S.K. Saidapur here on Wednesday and urged him not to allow the tree-felling in the land being handed over for construction of the park.

They also took exception to the move of giving around 400-acre land of the university on lease to private parties for taking up plantation. However, the Vice-Chancellor clarified that the move was aimed at getting revenue for the university, which was facing financial crunch.

He said the money would be used to construct a compound wall to mark the boundary of the university campus.

Dr. Saidapur said he would ensure that only a small number of trees would be felled for the construction of the science park and promised to take steps to grow trees thrice the number of the felled trees.

Later, the samiti members met Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar and urged him to take steps for development of Kelageri Tank and Unakal Tank.

They also submitted a memorandum to Mr. Srikar in this regard.
