BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday reserved verdict on a petition by a school from Hassan which had challenged the policy of the medium of instruction of the State Government. Vijayabharati Vidya Samasthe of Hassan had challenged the withdrawal of recognition of the school by the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) , Hassan. The DDPI had withdrawn recognition after the school allegedly violated the conditions and began imparting education in English. Justice Hinchigeri, who heard the case, reserved it for orders and orally asked the school not to make any admissions till the case is decided. Fine enhancedA Division Bench comprising Justice K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice Jawed Rahim enhanced the fine imposed on a villager of Chikmagalur district. The State contended that Rakesh of Kundu village had a physical relationship with a woman and promised to marry her. When she conceived, he asked her to undergo abortion. When she came to his house and asked him if he would marry her, Rakesh, his mother and sister threatened and abused her. Rakesh also tried to assault her. Rakesh was booked for rape. The presiding officer of the Fast Track Court, Chikmagalur, had sentenced Rakesh to seven years simple imprisonment and a fine. The Bench on Thursday enhanced the fine to Rs. 1 lakh and set off his sentence against the time he had already spent in jail.
