Employment generation programme for prisoners

In the first phase, 2,000 kg of hosiery waste
has been given to the Central Prison
For every kg of yarn separated, the workers
will get Rs. 8 a kg as wages

Coimbatore: The prison authorities launched an employment generation- cum-skill-imparting training scheme for prison inmates at the Coimbatore Central Prison recently wherein they will be involved in segregating yarn from the waste hosiery cloth pieces.

The project, initiated by the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons), A. Subramanian, aimed at imparting skills to the prisoners for ensuring their rehabilitation on discharge as well as in generating income for them when they serve the sentence.

The programme with the help of the hosiery industries in Tirupur was launched at the Central Prison by the DIG of Prisons, Coimbatore Range, P. Munivelu, in the presence of the chairman, KG Hospitals, G. Bhaktavatchalam. Co-ordinator of Bharathiar University, M. Padmanabhan gave a report on the economics of the scheme.

The prison has about 2,400 inmates of them nearly 1,000 are convict prisoners (including women). The convict prisoners would have to work and the Central Prison already has a power and handloom units that was involved in manufacture of uniform materials for the uniformed service personnel across the State besides a file pad making unit, book binding and file pad tape manufacturing units. The looms also have a dyeing unit as well. The latest project of segregating yarn from hosiery waste would provide more employment and income to the prisoners besides equipping them another skill. Efforts are on to start a hollow block manufacturing unit at the prison at the earliest.

Under the present scheme, the hosiery industries in Tirupur through Deputy Commandant General of Home Guards, R. Sivakumar, would supply hosiery waste. In the first phase 2,000 kg of hosiery waste had been given to the Central Prison and for every kg of yarn separated the workers would get Rs. 8 a kg as wages.
