KATHMANDU: Nepal on Thursday voted in a historic Constituent Assembly election without any major incident of violence. The voter turnout was over 60 per cent.

Over half-a-dozen armed groups operating in the Terai region had vowed to disrupt the election and urged the people to abstain from voting.

There were also concerns due to a number of clashes among the major parties.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala congratulated the people for the successful holding of the election.

Historic: Prachanda

Maoist Chairman Prachanda, in a statement, termed the election “historic” and commended the people for their patience and courage.
