Coimbatore: The State Police headquarters has asked all field-level Inspectors in the State to open individual e-mail accounts immediately.

This will facilitate faster communication among themselves and with their superiors, officers said.

The other major benefit is that the e-mail ID, which will be made public, will provide a platform for members of the public to interact with officers. Though an e-mail message will not have legal sanction to be accepted as a complaint, this system will, however, enable people to contact the officers concerned on any matter requiring police action.

Unit heads and State heads would be able to send in circulars, instructions and other materials over phone.

Police officers say that such a measure will help in saving time spent on sending “tapals” through special messengers. The system of interacting and getting information over e-mail should work well for the simple reason that more than 95 per cent of the police stations are now equipped with computers. This will make the force keep pace with the changes, the officials say.

Easy communication

Mr. Vijay Kumar, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), told The Hindu on Wednesday that once the police officers opened their e-mail accounts, they could communicate with their superiors instantly.

Mr. Vijay Kumar said that once the e-mail IDs were known to the public, those having inhibitions about visiting police stations or those facing time constraints could always pass on information to the police over e-mail.

Mr.Vijay Kumar said that compliance levels to the instructions were on the rise across the State.
