A satire on special relationship

THE ODD COUPLE: Aishwarya and Anant Nag in ‘Mr. Garagasa’

Film: Mr. Garagasa (Kannada)

Director: Dineshbaboo

Cast: Ananthnag, Komal, T.S. Nagabharana, Ramesh Bhat, Aishwarya, Lakshmi Hegde, Pavithra Lokesh, Sudharani and Vanishri

Devoid of violence and melodrama, Mr. Garagasa attempts at wholesome family entertainment with the message: “Set your own house in order.”

Reminiscent of the themes of popular French family dramas, Mr. Garagasa, which was shot in nine days, probes the emotional and moral forces that make or break family bondage and individual relationships. Individual integrity holds the key to peace and family order, the filmmaker tells us.

Director Dineshbaboo’s straight and realistic narration and economical screen play communicate complex things effectively. Sensible and witty dialogues and effective visual compositions save Mr. Garagasa from becoming a collection of a mega serial episodes.

Banking heavily on dialogues, the film traverses between serious and ridiculous situations and struggles to sustain audience interest throughout.

Interestingly, the film is a satire directed against the man-woman relationships in the film industry. It lampoons some writers in the Kannada cinema and mega serial viewers.

The family problems of an aged film producer marrying a woman younger to him by 15 years, romantic escapades of his stubborn daughter, who is hardly two years older to her step mother, and the arrival of a confused script writer Mr. Garagasa, who speaks sense and nonsense without punctuation, form the thread of the plot.

Ananthnag as the aged film producer, Aishwarya as his young wife and Komal as Mr. Garagasa stand out.
