People’s participation sought to check social evils

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: People’s participation needs to be augmented in the campaign against social evils, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan said on Friday.

Inaugurating the 19th Founder’s Day and Award Ceremony of the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC)-India, he said the increasing consumption of alcohol among youth was a concern.

Later, the Speaker presented the 13th Lakshmi N. Menon International Award to former Speaker V.M. Sudheeran. Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas handed over the citation.

Freedom fighter K.E. Mammen received the A.P. Udayabhanu Memorial Award for Social Service, Abdul Lethif, the Dr. A. Krishnamoorthy Memorial Award for Substance Abuse Prevention and Research, Ashraya, the P.A. John Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service and Swaranjali, the Dr. V. Suraraj Mani Memorial Award for Mental Health Promotion.

In his address, Mr. Thomas stressed the need for a national transport policy for establishing a strong and efficient public transport system in the country.

The overdependence on personalised modes of transport was creating chaos in the roads.

The Minister presented the ADIC Road Safety Alliance Award to ADGP Jacob Punnose (Visionary), Former Chairman of Railway Board M. N. Prasad (Activist), Chief Project Coordiantor, NATPAC Mahesh Chand (Research), City Traffic Police (Awareness) and to The New Indian Express (Social Responsibility).

Former Additional Chief Secretary Babu Paul presided over the function. ADIC director Johnson J. Edayaranmula spoke.
